From my experience in the field of multimedia, in other words, I worked in various fields of design, and I found that as a designer, you have to put your hands on learning programming, the early you start was better for you. Why?
To answer this question ... Programming is a basic solution to speed up the completion of manual work that requires time and effort and is what companies and institutions seek, as there are tugs that are very difficult to complete manually for that solution with the intervention of the software.
You as a designer may have to work in companies and projects that require you to deal with programmers or use programming in your work. For example: as an aftereffect designer you have to implement the programming in your work (script in the timeline) .. as a Maya designer (you use Python and Mel Script) .. as a web design designer (HTML and CSS languages), you see its very important.
Especially in a three-dimension, there are tasks that you will not be able to accomplish manually for the aforementioned. Therefore, it is necessary to use programming in various projects. Of course, some programmers specialize in all disciplines, even with the modeling section, if you have an entre programming knowledge it will help you to distinguish and develop your skills in your specialty.
I Advise You to learn to program even if you are a designer.
